In the 1990s, writer Dr. George Rivera and I began creating bilingual children’s books with a shared goal: to celebrate our culture and provide young readers with stories that reflected their lives, traditions, and experiences. We wanted children to see themselves, their families, and their communities represented in literature while inviting all readers to discover the richness of Chicano culture.
Written by Dr. George Rivera and illustrated by Tony Ortega, the series follows the adventures of Pano, a young Chicano boy, and his two dogs, Cholo and Vato. Through their journeys, readers explore family traditions, cultural celebrations, history, and the discoveries of childhood. Each story is presented in both Spanish and English, accompanied by colorful and expressive illustrations that bring these experiences to life.
The books encourage conversations about identity, heritage, family, and memory while introducing young readers to important cultural traditions. From celebrating Día de los Muertos in Mexico to spending a summer in a northern New Mexican village, Pano’s adventures reveal the beauty of everyday experiences and the connections that shape who we are.
Days of the Dead: Aztec Adventure of Cholo, Vato and Pano
A bilingual adventure that introduces young readers to Día de los Muertos through the imagination and curiosity of a child as Halloween ends and the traditions of remembrance begin.
Who Am I? Family Adventures of Cholo, Vato, and Pano
Pano explores questions of identity and belonging during a summer spent with his grandmother, discovering family stories, traditions, and the importance of knowing where we come from.
Cholo in the Clouds: Memory Adventures with Cholo, Vato and Pano
A heartfelt story about love, loss, and memory as Pano reflects on the special moments shared with a beloved family friend.
Cinco de Mayo: Patriotic Adventures of Cholo, Vato and Pano
Pano, Cholo, and Vato travel through history to discover the meaning and significance of Cinco de Mayo.
